Are Wax Melts Safe?

Are Wax Melts Safe?

What do you think.. Are Wax Melts Safe?

So are wax melts safe? First of all, Many people looking for wax melts think about this question. You have to make up your own minds. When Melting Moments of Madness first started back in 2016. Interestingly, a lot of research went into the best ingredients to use. I only source the best ingredients on the market today sparing no expense when it comes to using quality. Obviously there are precautionery statements which by law come with fragrance oils in there concentrated form. Once mixed with wax the percentage of fragrance oil is a less concentrated state. To be exact we use 10% fragrance oil which is the maximum loading dose for wax melts. We ensure our formulas for mixing our wax melts is exact. Obviously you should always read the label before using your wax melts.

Here at Melting Moments of Madness we pride ourselves in bringing you quality fragranced wax melts for you to enjoy filling your home with beautiful aroma. Many people these days have concerns about the safety of children and their pets using wax melts around the home. We have researched for the safest ingredients to ensure our products are as safe as can be for your whole family.

Melting Moments of Madness decided to use Soy Wax for producing our wax melts. Again, we have taken a lot of time researching the different waxes and the pros and cons for each type of wax on the market today. Soy wax is derived from the soy bean, therefore, it is more natural and made from renewable sources. It is a natural alternative choice, to the traditional paraffin wax, and there is little impact on our environment using soy wax compared to paraffin wax. Please take a look at this article from the Independent News Paper which is an interesting read about how in particular Paraffin candles can be harmful to the environment and us.

It is popular because Soy wax is suitable for vegans/vegetarians and is not tested on animals. We wanted a natural wax that we could be sure was environmentally friendly and from a renewable source to try limiting our carbon footprint where ever possible.

Our Fragrances

The scents we use to fragrance our wax melts have been sourced carefully from our chosen fragrance suppliers and are fully compliant with IFRA (International Fragrance Association) with RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) regulations. We pride ourself knowing that All fragrances are not tested on animals, cruelty free, suitable for vegans/vegetarians and paraben free.

There is evidence that some essential oils are unsafe for pets you may have at home. For this reason Melting Moments of Madness choose to use synthetic fragrance oils to fragrance our wax melts that fill your home with aroma. Synthetic fragrance oil seems to be a safer option to essential oils provided they are not consumed. All of our fragranced wax melts will come with the CLP ( Classification, Labelling and Packaging) information as per the legislation. ( We are currently updating our CLP labelling system)

Each fragrance oil has gone through numorous testing by our suppliers in different environments and then again trialled by ourselves to ensure its quality before our products reach our customers to enjoy.

CLP & Precautionery Statements for Fragrance Oil

CLP Labels are important and are a piee of legislation which a wax melt or candle maker have to comply with to legally sell our products here in the uk.

Due to our fragrances being synthetic, like in any air fresheners, carpet freshener, cleaning products used around your home, washing powders and Personal Care products etc, they do come with precautionary statements and some ingredients have warnings implimented.

Our CLP labels include signal words, hazard statement and business contact details for each
hazard class and category. All fragrance oils come to us with warnings and like anything else, the warnings are for precaution. Here are some of the precautionery and hazardous warnings statements which you may come across with your wax melts, please note they mostly relate to the fragrance oil added to the wax.

Hazardous Info

You will most often read about 2 main hazards on the back of your wax products which are:
(1) reference to Skin Sensitise and (2) Reference to Environmental Hazards

CLP Label
  • May cause irritation to the skin and if so, seek medical advice.
  • Do not ingest
  • Avoid release to the environment
  • Dispose of contents/container to approved disposal site, in accordance with local regulations
  • Harmful to Aquatic Animals

We use the best ingredients and are adamant they have to be the safest too, with reassurence from our suppliers. Obviously, anyone who suffers from any medical issues regarding breathing should think twice about using wax melts or air fresheners. It is also about being sensible and staying safe.

Not many vendors actually have the ingredients from fragrance oils added to their products on websites today. We are currently updating this information onto our website. Soon you will be able to see exactly what each fragranced wax melt contains in the fragrance oil. There are a wide range of ingredients which make up certain scent oils and there are some ingredients which may be an irritant to your skin if you come into direct contact. If you have any queries or concerns regarding allergies please send us a message for further information and we will gladly assist you.

Why choose to use Wax Melts from Melting Moments of Madness?

Are Wax Melts Safe?

The big question is….. Are Wax Melts Safe? I have come to the conclusion, In a nutshell, if used correctly and following the safety rules, there is no reason why wax melts are not safe to use around your home providing you always read the safety labels before using them. Here is another interesting read which may help you decide if wax melt burners are safe to breathe.

Always Follow Safety Rules and stay safe

Using Wax Melts 2020

Using Wax Melts

Wax Melts

There is nothing better than walking into a room which is alive with the fresh aroma! Wax Melts are becoming increasingly popular these days in comparison to when I first started making them in 2016. There are so many vendors to choose from and so much choice in frangrances. Wax melts can be used with either the traditional type of Wax Melter which uses a tealight or there are more and more Electronic Wax Melters on the market these days. Whichever type you choose the outcome is still the same… to fill your home with fragrance. Therefore wax melts are a perfect choice for everyone to use.

What is a Wax Melt?

Wax Melts are small, scented chunks of wax, which come in various colours, shapes and sizes, filled with a fragrance oil and create both a cold or hot scent throw. They can come in the form of mini Wax Melts, Wax Melt Snap Bars, Wax Tarts or even Wax Brittle. Wax melts have a cold scent throw yet they are designed to be heated gently to releasing a hot scent throw which will fill your chosen room with a delightful fragrance. Wax Melts are similar to candles but without a naked flame meaning you would require a Wax Warmer to activate an even scent distribution around your home. You can use Wax Melts in any room for example, Livingrooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and even in the hallway.

Wax Melts are the flameless choice to fragrance your Home…

Wax Melts are potentially a flame-free option to Fragrance your home!

The beauty of using wax melts is that they are packed with fragrance and yet do not have a wick to burn and therefore potentially do not require a naked flame. Which is perfect if, for example, you are in a rented property where naked flames and your landlord has prohibited the use of candles or naked flames as a Fire safety Rule. Also wax melts are great in the hustle and bustle of the household with small children, busy homes and active lifestyles because of the flameless aspect of the wax melt. Many people who love wax melts can safely say wax melts are versitile. Look at your lifestyle and home setting when choosing the Oil Burner / Wax Melter. Please read on to find out more.

How Does A Wax Melt Work?

Wax Melts are a flameless option to fragrance your home, so how does a wax melt work? Wax Melts are designed to slowly release their fragrance as they get warm and melt. They do require some form of heat source to achieve this. The heat may come in the form of a light bulb, electricity or the traditional tealight candle. Depending on the type and design of recepticle you choose to warm the wax in your wax warmer. All Wax Warmers come in different sizes and only a certain amount of wax melts or tarts, can be used specific to the size of the well. So be sure to add small pieces of wax to avoid spillage once the wax has melted.

Choosing your Wax Melter?

When using wax melts it is really important when choosing the correct Wax Melter for your home. You have to take into consideration which room? Due to space restictions I would recomend using a smaller burner in room like the bathroom or hallways. Less wax would be need to be melted to fill your room with fragrance. Larger wax melters and Aroma Lamps are ideal for larger spaces like, living room and bedrooms, dining rooms. Always make sure you take due care and attention when deciding where to place your wax melter and always read the safety information included with your new wax melter.

Using Your Wax Melts

  1. Place your chosen style of wax melter in a safe place on a flat surface.
  2. Ensure when using the melter for the first time that the wax bowl at the top is clean.
  3. Pop 1 or 2 of our wax melts into the dish. (Or break one or 2 pieces from your snap bar)
  4. We recommend that you add a little wax at a time to make sure there is no over filling your dish or spillages.
  5. Either light your tealight or turn on your wax warmer.
  6. Sit back and wait for the wax to melt.
  7. Enjoy long lasting hours of fragrance filling your home!
  8. Once you have finishe with your warmer make sure you extinguish your tealight or turn off your warmer.
  9. For information and tips for removing your used wax we’ll explain in more detail below!
  10. Most Important: NEVER leave your wax melters on or lit when leaving the house or over night!

What fragrances do wax melts come in?

We have some fantastic news here at Melting Moments of Madness! When I first started making wax melts in 2016 I only had around 11 fragrances to choose from. Wow fast forward a few years and I now have over 200 fragranced wax melts to choose from. Our scent list is forever expanding and we always try to accomodate our customers requests and try and source a fragrance if it is not already on the fragrance list. No matter what your personal preference is there is always something for everyone, from fresh and Clean, to Fruity, Floral, Sugar and Spice, Fragrances which smell good enough to eat, without forgetting a fantastic variety of Designer and Perfume Dupes and much more. The choice is huge. Take a look at our fragrance list which is constantly being updated!

What wax warmers can I use?

We offer a fantastic range of Oil Burners, Wax Melters and Aroma Lamps here at Melting Moments of Madness. There are great variety of shapes and stylish designs to suit all of your needs and to compliment your Decor. You can swap and change throughout the seasons and store away to use over and over. You can choose the traditional burner which requires the naked flame of the tealight, the electric melter or the Aroma Lamps. The three types of burners are suitable to be used with wax melts.

Information from our supplier of Wax Melters & Oil Burners!

I am sharing this information after me reading advice on oil burners, wax melters and Aroma Lamps from my supplier. As far as my supplier is aware all oil burners available to us are suitable to use with wax melts. Infact, according to our supplier, the only restiction is in reverse – ie. there are some burners (electric burners) which are only suitable for use only with wax melts and NOT with Fragrance Oils. Yet all burners should be perfectly safe with wax melts.

The Following statements are referenced from my supplier of oil burners and wax melters

“To the best of our knowledge, there is only one reason why some manufacturers are sometimes ‘on the fence’ as to whether their products are suitable for use with wax, and as such you can sometimes find little paper advice slips inside the packaging of oil burners which have statements such as ‘it is not recommended to use wax melt products with this item’.

The reason, as far as we are aware, boils down to (excuse the pun) the size of the bowl, or dish.”

  • The burners available vary in size, the size and depth of the boels will also vary in size.
  • When using oil you can see the exact amount you are adding. You can make sure it does not overflow. So it is obvious when to stop adding oil.
  • Wax Melts are not in a liquid state when added to the bowl. They may also vary in size, shape and volume.
  • Add small amounts of wax at a time to ensure the bowl does not overflow.
  • For the reason above some manufacturuers therefore steer clear, with caution, of recommending use with wax melts. You only know once the wax has melted if you have added too much.
  • If the bowl / dish is small (as with some of the burners we sell), then a medium or large wax melt, once melted, may overfill the bowl with wax, and cause the wax to overspill.
  • Now – and we cannot make this clear enough – overfilling your burner with wax is dangerous, and is a serious safety concern! Overflowing wax can cause fire!
  • However, to the best of the knowledge of our supplier, there is no reason why any burner cannot be used with wax melts, so long as the wax is added gradually, and with care.
  • By gradually adding small chunks of wax and monitoring the fill level in the bowl will help to avoid overspills.
  • As far as we are aware, there are no other reasons why any of our burners cannot be used with wax melt products.

Please Note:

Appropriate sized tealight are to be used whilst operating any of our burners. (particularly smaller ones). A larger tealight in a small burner can mean that the naked flame is too close to the bottom of the bowl / dish, and this must be avoided, as it could potentially cause the bowl or dish to overheat and crack. Provided that small tealights are used in small burners, there is no safety issue that we are aware of concerning overheating

Hopefully the above information can clarify any concerns you may have. I personally have 5 different styles of burners around my home and use them on regular occasions. I tend to use x2 wax melts at a time and find this is an adequat amount per burner. However, I know a few of my customers use more melts at one time. It is best to use 1 or 2 wax melts or 1 or 2 pieces of snap bar, at one time and allow to melt, before adding more to your burner.

How to remove the wax & clean your wax warmer

Use these easy steps to ensure your get the most from using your wax melts. Make sure you keep your dish clean, removing any residue wax before replacing it with new wax. Our aim is to provide the best experience while using wax melts. Whilst creating the best quality fragrance, in the safest and best possible way. Please take a look at our tips and advice for removing your wax melts safely.

Follow these Steps….

  1. Always extinguish your tealight / unplug your power cord first, before cleaning.
  2. Discard wax once the fragrance has dimished.
  3. There are a couple of ways to disgard of your used wax melts…..
  4. if wax is still liquified – use a cotton wool ball to soak up the wax. Wipe clean and add fresh wax melts.
  5. Allow the dish to cool to room temperature. Place the dish in the freezer for 30 minutes to shrink the wax. Remove from freezer, tip the bowl and the wax will drop out. Allow the bowl to return to room temperature before reusing.
  6. If the wax has set, light tealight / turn power on long enough to loosen the wax from the bowl. Wipe clean and add more wax.
  7. Never use a sharp object to get rid of the wax because you may damage the structure of the bowl.

Once you’ve removed the wax, discard of it safely and wipe the dish clean with a cloth. Your  ScentGlow Warmer is then ready for your next Scent Plus Melt!

What are Scented Soy Wax Melts?

What are Scented Soy Wax Melts

Scented Soy Wax Melts

Scented Soy Wax Melts have become an extremely popular trend these days. Many people who are new to the wax melting experience are keen and intrigued to have a better understanding of why these wickless wax fragranced candles are so fast growing in the home fragrance industry.

Here are a few facts just for you, to help you get accustomed to the world of wax melts.

#1. What are Scented Soy Wax Melts?Scented Soy Wax Melts

In a nutshell scented wax melts are basically shaped pieces of scented wax without a wick. They can come in a large variety of shapes, sizes and colours.  The pieces of wax are melted down into liquid and as the wax heats up and melts the fragrance released.  They are intended to enhance your home with a beautiful injection of fragrance.  Our Scented Wax Melts can be used in both a traditional wax / Oil Burners or they can also be used in the more modern electric Wax Warmers. Which ever method you choose the end result is the same.  The aim is to fill your home with beautiful aroma.

#2.  What kind of Wax do we use?

All our Scented Soy Wax Melts are handmade using 100% natural soy pillarblend wax which has been developed and manufactured in the UK or US.  This type of wax has been specifically designed to compliment both pillar candles and wax melts.  It works well blending with dyes and fragrances. It is vegan friendly and biodegradable.  No animal products are used and no animal testing has been carried out on manufature.

#3.  What exactly is Soy Wax

Soy Beans make Scented Soy Wax MeltsSoy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans.

  • After harvesting, the beans are cleansed, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes.
  • The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.
  • The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated.
  • This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature.
  • Animal feed is produced from the leftover bean husks.
  • So nothing goes to waste.

The U.S. grows the vast majority of the world’s soy beans, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana, according to an article I read from the Candle Science, check it out for yourself right here.

#4.  Soy v’s Paraffin Wax

So here at Melting Moments of Madness we prefer to use a Soy based wax. Here are a few facts on soy and paraffin wax for you to make up your own mind.  There is such a great debate over Soy v’s Paraffin Wax abd I do think it is down to personal preference at the end of the day.

 100% Soy Wax Facts
  • Soy Wax is made from the oil from soya beans, making this wax a vegetable waxScented Soy Wax Melts
  • Is made from a nautral source
  • Soy beans are primarily grown in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.
  • It burns 30-50% longer tha Paraffin Wax
  • Soy Wax burns cleaner
  • Soy Wax is renewable and biodegradable
  • Is Creamy White in appearance
  • Soy Wax produces a near zeo perto- carbon soot
  • No toxins
  • No Carcinogens and pollutants
  • Produce a decent scent throw
An interesting read about Soy Wax, check it out!
Paraffin Wax Facts
  • Paraffin Wax is extremely popular
  • It is cheaper than other waxes
  • Paraffin Wax is derived from crude oil
  • Extracted from refined oil
  • Paraffin Wax burns hotter temperature than Soy Wax
  • Paraffin emmits harmful black soot
  • less expensive
  • Food Grade Paraffin is fine
  • Burns faster than soy wax
  • If temperature gets too high it could set on fire
This read from the encyclopedia may be a good read called “Paraffin Wax Chemical Compound” or  “Paraffin Wax

#5. Introduction to Using Wax Melts

Burning Scented Soy Wax MeltsAs we know traditional Candles are used by lighting the wick and as the flame generates heat it creates a pool of wax which melts and lets off fragrance.  The difference with Scented Soy Wax Melts are they are completely wick free and also the wax does not burn away like traditional candles.  Wax Melts require a wax warmer device and the wax needs to be disposed off eventually once the fragrance dimishes.

Wax Warmers / Oil Burners / Wax Burners / Tart Burners or what ever you know them by all work the Oil Burners and Scented Soy Wax Meltssame in principle. Basically the Traditional Warmers would require one or two wax melts to be placed in the oil well at the top and a tea light would be lit and placed under the oil well. The tea light will warm the wax slowly from below and once the wax is fully melted the fragrance will be released into the room filling it with a beautiful aroma.

There are many different types of wax warmers available on the market today, made from a variety of materials.  Traditional Wax Burners can be metal, Glass, Ceramic, Wooden and Ceramic. If you would prefer not to have to a traditional oil burner which requires a tea light you can have the option to choose the more modern eletric wax warmers instead. This usually has a hot plate which will heat the wax bowl from underneath.  This is a safer option that using the traditional wax warmer which requires a naked flame from the tea light.  Whichever you prefer there will still be saftey advice to follow while using your wax melts to ensure home safety.

Unlike candles, the wax from wax melts will not evapourate, only the fragragrance will evapourate and the wax will remain, this means that once the fragrance is lost from the wax melts, it is time to discard the used wax from your oil burner and replace it with new wax melts.
Please note, it is important that you do not add anything extra to the wax for example, water especially or try to add more fragrance because you would not benefit from this.  We add the highest dose of fragrance to these wax melts to enable the best scent throw possible. While I refer to scent throw I actually mean the amount of scent the wax throw out into the air.

Obviously when a wax melt is solid and cold it still releases a scent throw which we refer to as a “cold scent throw” and likewise once the wax is heated and melted the scent throw is great but will eventually run out.  A “hot scent throw” means the scent thrown from heated wax melts.

#6. The Life of a Wax Melt

Scented Soy Wax MeltsThere are multiple factors which will determine the life of each Scented Soy Wax Melts.  Customers should take these factors into account, for example the type of wax used, the fragrance ( some fragrances are naturally more stroner than others and others are naturally delicate.  The companyScented Soy Wax Melts suppliers of the fragrances, size of the melts, warmer wattage if an electric warmer is being used.  The ambient room temperature could also have an effect. Customers using x2 scented wax melts or x2 pieces from our wax melt snap bar range , on average the fragrance should give off a nice strong scent throw for anywhere between 4-8 hours or more before fragrance is gone.  You can find a great variety of Scented Soy Wax Melts here for you to choose from.

Scented Soy Wax Melts Safety Banner

#7. Wax Melt Safety

Even though our Scented Soy Wax Melts are part of the candle family, unlike traditional candles they do not have a wick although they do hold safety warnings which should be adhered too.
Some melt warmers are electrical and should have already been tested and are either UL or ETL certified, in theory they are able to be left plugged in, although I would recommend always turning off your electrical device when either leaving the house or going to bed at night.
Just to be on the safe side. Some customers prefer the electrical melter due to the fact is that a naked flame is not required which makes it safer in the home.
If using a traditional oil / melt burner with a tea light then you should be more safety conscious. According to the National Candle Association there are approximately 25 house fires a day and these are a result of forgetting to blow out candles and either going to bed or leaving their homes unattended.
These days it is quite common for landlords of apartment buildings and dormatory rooms now prohibit scneted candles in order to prevent a fire hazard.
If you would liket to view our full Scented Soy Wax Melts safety Guide please click here.

#8. How to discard your wax!

  • You can either light a tea light and after a few seconds it will the warm the bottom of the wax enough to push out of the oil bowl and then wipe clean.
  • Or you can put your oil burner with set wax in the freezer for 10-15 minutes and the wax will easily pop out.  (I would always recommend allowing your burner to return to room temperature before reusing).
  • For glass oil burner bowls, run under hot water and then push wax out. (Make sure you dry thoroughly before reusing).
  • Finally if the wax has melted, you could use a a cotton wool ball to gently soak the wax from the burner, wipe clean and add fresh wax.
  • Especially Take care not to damage the glass or ceramic.
  • Avoid sharp objects.
  • Do not use if you notice a crack in the glass.  (Glass Bowls can be replaced).
  • Remove any remaining wax with warm water and a moist cloth or sponge.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin, if contact occurs, flush with water.  If irritation persists, contact a physician.
  • If you are using the freezer method, please ensure you allow the burner to return back to room temperature before using again, or it may crack from the heat of the tea light.

Finally I do hope that you choose to try oil wax melts, once tried there is no looking back.

It seems like wax melts are now almost as popular as traditional candles. Or are not far off.
